For Dr. David Nelson, being an orthodontist means days are filled with conversations and laughter. He is able to meet and build relationships with unique people, and help each one change his or her life. Dr. Nelson loves seeing the positive effects orthodontic treatment has, when it corrects a person’s bite and smile and increases self-esteem and confidence.
Dr. Nelson loves practicing orthodontics because it allows him to spend time with each patient. He's passionate about customizing treatment for patients' specific clinical and personal needs and handling even the most complex cases. He’s been practicing for more than 30 years and is just as excited to come into the office now as he was when he first started seeing patients.
Dr. Nelson is proud of the team and how each person contributes to the office. Together, team members ensure that patients are treated gently and with respect for their unique needs. Dr. Nelson especially likes seeing how patients and parents respond to the genuine warmth shown by the team, and how each patient is engaged and encouraged.

Beyond the Office
Born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Dr. Nelson moved to Texas when he was three years old. He has called Austin home for almost thirty years. Along with his wife Brenda, Dr. Nelson is glad to have raised their two adult daughters, Jessica and Jayna, here. Their daughters are now grown, but Dr. Nelson and his wife have several fur children — their dogs — to keep them company.
Dr. Nelson and Brenda enjoy dinner with friends, going to the movies, and traveling to be with their daughters. He also likes flying his plane, restoring vintage Corvettes, riding mountain bikes, and mountain climbing.
Before becoming an orthodontist, Dr. Nelson served four years in the U.S. Army as a helicopter gunship (Cobra) pilot. He served a tour in Vietnam, where he was awarded several commendations, including the Silver Star and 26 Air Medals with Valor.
Following his service, Dr. Nelson continued to fly helicopters as a bush pilot in the Alaskan and Canadian Arctic before enrolling in the School of Business at the University of Houston.
Dr. Nelson worked hard to put himself through college and dental school by continuing to fly helicopters for eight summer seasons above the 60th Parallel. Beyond establishing and developing his dedicated work ethic, Dr. Nelson asserts it was an incredible experience and a great way to put himself through college!
Continuing his commitment to serve others, Dr. Nelson volunteers with the Wounded Warrior Project. Treated badly when he returned from Vietnam, he strives to ensure that all military men and women receive the respect and care they deserve. Additionally, Dr. Nelson is a board member of the Hill Country Education Foundation.
